Bringing Cluster Computing Speeds to Desktops
Parallel computing is a form of computation in which many calculations are carried out simultaneously, operating on the principle that large problems can often be divided into smaller ones, which are then solved concurrently (“in parallel”). Clusters, MPPs, and grids use multiple computers to work on the same task. Specialized parallel computer architectures with multi-core and multi-processor computers can also accomplish this task. Open Discovery provides the software requirements that can be used to enable parallel processing on multi-core, multi-processor systems.
Open Discovery includes Open MPI, Message Passing Interface (MPI- for parallel processing) library project combining technologies and resources from several other projects (FT-MPI, LA-MPI, LAM/MPI, and PACX-MPI). It is used by many TOP500 supercomputers. The customized Open-Mpi allows you to achieve cluster computing speeds (10-40 node Beowulf Linux cluster) to your multicore desktop or Laptop. Running Molecular Dynamics or Virtual Screening is faster than never before. With ODv3 you bring down cost setting up clusters and achieve portability to run on the current generation laptops/desktops.
ODv3 is ideal for university laboratories, students and researchers who want quick results and efficient method of using their hardware. Scaling down 10-40 node cluster performance to a single desktop/laptop is a great way to achieve productivity. Also supports Nvidia CUDA architecture and CUDA toolkit v3.2
The Attempt to Build a Complete Bioinformatics Solution
With 500+ software modules and tools, Open Discovery got better. New Additions include PyRx for virtual screening, NCBI-Gnome Workbench for graphical genome analysis, and Avogadro for Quantum Mechanics Calculations. PyMol is a powerful image rendering and visualization tool. Autodock Vina with multicore parallel algorithm is for Docking. GROMACS 4.5 with multiprocessor parallel algorithm for molecular dynamics. MODELLER & Jackal are most popular Homology Modelling tools. Complete Multimedia package
ODv3 is now with Video Lan Client Media player.VLC is a portable multimedia player, encoder, and streamer supporting many audio and video codecs and file formats as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It is able to stream over networks and to transcode multimedia files and save them into various formats. Video Lan Client (VLC media player) and Out of the box support for Mp3, DivX and almost all multimedia codecs.
Organize your Photographs
ODv3 includes Google’s Picasa an image organizer and image viewer for organizing and editing digital photos, plus an integrated online photo-sharing facility. Also includes GIMP (Gnu Image Manipulation Program) a Photoshop alternative for editing and manipulating your photographs.
Windows worries
Do not bother about compatibility of your favorite windows programs as Open Discovery V3 enables Wine, Which is a translation layer (a program loader) capable of running Windows applications on Linux. Windows programs running in Wine act as native programs would, running without the performance or memory usage penalties of an emulator, with a similar look and feel to other applications on your desktop.
